Afterwards I took out my bike to ride to Eschborn. I wanted to get some things for my house at Real, a store which is kind of like Superstore and Future Shop put together. Biking in Frankfurt and Steinbach is nice, because there are often bike paths or roads. However, in some areas and on some streets I am not sure what to do. I don't know if bikes are prohibited, but these roads aren't really wide enough for me to feel safe biking. I see lots of people biking on the sidewalks in some places, so today I ended up doing that at times. Other times I walked my bike. Once I got out of Steinbach (which didn't exactly take long...) I discovered that there was a path along side the road for bikes and people. It was a very pretty ride. Beside me were fields, and even a horse or two, and in the distance I could see Frankfurt.
It was a bit hazy, I think partly because it was so warm and humid! Here is a picture of the path I was riding on. You can't see, but there is a two lane highway road on the left. The photo is looking back towards Steinbach.
At Real, I had a look at their toaster ovens. I want to buy one because I don't have an oven in my kitchen. Like most of the kitchens I saw in small apartments, there is only two burners and no full stove/oven. I also bought a bunch of little things. Dust pans, vegetable peeler, scissors, umbrella, and some cute little stackable coloured boxes for my desk. I also bought a pair of birkenstock like sandals. They were only 10 € and I couldn't resist how colourful they were!
I also got groceries, so had a bunch of stuff to take back. I didn't buy a toaster oven because there is no way I'd be able to get one of those back on my bike. But even so with my back pack and basket full it was quite a load to take back. With the humidity I was half dead when I got home. (OK, not really, but I was very hot and sweaty). I took some pictures of my street, to show you were I live:
This is looking to the south from my place. You can see my gate as well. On the left, by the dark coloured trees there is a little park from where I can often hear kids playing. I guess that will change a bit come Monday as everyone goes back to school - me included! This is the way I walk to go into Steinbach or get to the S-Bahn station to go to Frankfurt. In the other direction I get to school.
Thinking of school, I spent from about 3pm to 7pm at school today. I went in to help the grade 4 teacher get ready, and also the TA coordinator get the Hort (before and after school program) room unpacked and ready for Monday. I can't believe how much work there is to get ready for a school year. Especially for all the new teachers who are having to make everything from scratch. I spent 2 hours cutting out letters, laminating them, cutting them out again and putting them up on the bulletin board to make a "word wall" for the grade 4 class. And since this is a brand new school there are lots of boxes to unpack of all the new materials and all the old stuff from the old school. The last two years they have been in containers (portables). It will take a while for everything to get organized and everything running smoothly. Many of the staff members are so dedicated though, and a lot of work has gone into getting everything ready for Monday. I know a bunch of teachers were in today, and some planning on being back tomorrow. I on the other hand, have plans to visit the archaeology museum tomorrow. Will update you on that tomorrow :)
