Roadtrip weekend

This past weekend Will's dad was here on a business trip. He rented a car and had the weekend free, so we went for a small road trip on Sunday. We are so lucky here, because there are so many places of interest so close. First we stopped at Burg Frankenstein. This may or may not have been an influence on Mary Shelley's writing. The castle was a bit drafty, thanks to no complete walls, so we didn't stay too long. The weather was quite chilly and windy.

Next stop was Felsenmeer, Odenwald. This place is basically a river or waterfall of huge boulders! I believe that they were created by freeze-thaw breaking up the top layer of rock. Here they are in a rift which makes them look almost like a waterfall. They have paths that go to the top, but what most people do is climb straight up the boulders. There were lots of families, just letting their kids have fun climbing all over the place. We then had a picnic lunch at the top, sitting among frozen puddles and bits of snow.

Looking down after the first little way up. The boulders got larger farther up.

After "Berg steigen", we drove a little farther to Worms. A small ancient city, it has a lovely cathedral in the centre. Worms is also where Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic church. We stopped for a drink, and then went into the cathedral. There was a service going on and so we got to listen to the organ for a while.

And then it was time to head back to Frankfurt. We went over to a friends new apartment for a barbecue. It was a great evening - good company (actually hilarious company...) and great food. I'm really looking forward to the weather getting warmer so we can start having barbecues at school again.
