Herculaneum and Pompeii

Three nights is not enough time to spend in the Naples/Sorrento/Vesuvius area. There is so much to see! I will post more when I'm home and can access the photos from my camera, but I wanted to just post a glimpse of what I've been seeing. Not that I've remembered to take many pictures on my iPhone ...

I got here Wednesday afternoon. I am staying in Sant Agnello so that afternoon/evening I walked into Sorrento. Yesterday I was on an all day tour of Vesuvius and Pompeii. Not a great tour, but still glad I did it. Then today I tackled Herculaneum and went (again) to Pompeii. Lots and lots of walking, sunshine and lots of photos  :)

Here are a few to share:

A mostly intact mosaic in Herculaneum. I can't imagine what the houses looked like new with all the mosaics and frescoes covering the floors and walls. What is left is beautiful.

Herculaneum

The part of Herculaneum that has been excavated is such a small part of the whole town, that walking around it made me wonder what was buried under where I stood. The arches at the bottom of the photo are the old warehouses/dock storage at the edge of the old coastline. There they found 300 skeletons buried. They still have models (presumably) in the alcoves for you to see what they found.

And apparently that is all I have ... Good thing I've got tons on my camera!!

Off to Naples tomorrow morning to go to the archaeology museum and then catch a train to Rome in the afternoon. :)
